'NDRANGHETA 4 BILLION TURNOVER FROM USURY AND EXTORTIONS
(AGI) - Catanzaro, Italy, Feb. 10 - According to Eurispes statistics institute the turnover of 'ndrangheta (Calabria's
mafia) in 2004 was 4,116 million euro. These revenues came from usury and the protection racket. This out of law turnover
is 30 pct of the entire revenues of the four main mafia families that was esteemed 13,520 million euro. Usury and extortion
profits place 'ndrangheta at the second place after camorra (Neapolitan mafia) that earns 4,603 million euro every year. Sicilian
mafia earns 3,526 million euro and Sacra Corona Unita (Puglia's mafia) 1,175 million. Eurispes says that the usury and protection
racket is the main source of money for mafia families to enter in legal economy both directly, purchasing business in crisis,
and indirectly co-opting entrepreneurs in the mafia family. Among Calabria's towns Vibo Valentia comes first for the usury
risk (85.2 pct usury risk rate) followed by Catanzaro and Reggio Calabria (83.6 and 81.2). Cosenza and Crotone are in the
last positions (79.5 and 78.4). During one year the rate of crimes linked to racket and dynamite attacks denounced to police
